Mike Schappell’s an expert in nutrition, exercise, and intermittent fasting. This episode looks at the science behind intermittent fasting and we learn from Mike’s years of experience with his own nutrition and coaching others.
“When I got started as a personal trainer, I was like, most personal trainers in that I was pretty terrible at it. Basically just counting reps and making up random workouts. From there, I learned that instead of trying to crush people every day, more people need help learning how to move properly.” Mike
Mike has taken an experiential approach to fad diets by trying them himself before recommending to anyone else. In most cases, he will only keep a piece of the diet to incorporate into his lifestyle moving forward.
Mike and Brandon discuss the science, the benefits, and tips for intermittent fasting and what takes place in your body during the process.
They discuss the formation of the early food pyramid and the scientists that worked on it and their surprise when the legislation took a different approach than the majority of the nutritionists consulted for the project.
One of the benefits of intermittent fasting is autophagy. Autophagy is a cellular mechanism where your body can get rid of old cells. So when a normal like fully functioning healthy human body, you should have cellular turnover happening fairly regularly. In fact, all the cells in the human body are completely renewed every seven years.
Another main benefit of fasting is that it actually increases your body’s growth hormone levels. And I know there’s one study, I don’t remember who the researchers are, but they showed participants actually had. A 2000% increase in growth hormone, which is an insane number to think about.
What are the things to focus on that would make a positive transformation in your life according to Mike:
1. Sleep better
2. Focus on Your Nutrition
3. Introduce regular movement and exercise into your life.
