The Sleuth Podcast is a show about real private investigators from Blackman Detective Services and their stories and insights from the field. Jamie and Lindsey the hosts of the podcast join us on Fire Within to talk about how they got their start in this fascinating field and how people with sedentary jobs can maintain optimal fitness.

Lindsey shared an incredibly funny story of when she worked loss prevention and a man had stolen 6 racks of ribs by stuffing them down his pants.

Julie talks about how as a PI it is hard to be overly empathetic and get personally involved in the outcome of her clients’ cases.

Brandon and the ladies from The Sleuth played a game of Fire Within Trivia. They answered some true or false questions that people often wonder about fitness and nutrition.

1. True or False, you can spot reduced body fat?
A: False, if you’re doing it through natural methods, it’s, it’s pretty difficult to force the body to lose fat in one particular area. a lot of times it’s hormonally based.  I just can’t get rid of that belly fat.

2. Whole grains are always healthy choices?
A: False, I think for the vast majority of us. Especially, if you’re having any hormonal issues, weight loss issues, blood sugar issues, cognitive issues, it is worth limiting your intake of whole grains unless they’re pressure cooked because of that lectin protein.

3. Exercising and eating less is the best way to get fit for everyone?
A: False, it may be more important to look at the hormonal implications of your diet than strictly counting calories.

“There’s plenty of shortcuts you can take, but I feel like it almost always bites you in the end.” ~Brandon

4. Low carb is the way to go, always!
A: False, There are different types of chains of carbs: polysaccharides, monosaccharides, but typically your complex carbohydrate structures like sweet potatoes, vegetables and things like that, you’re not going to absorb that the same way.

5. Reducing fat intake through your food is a great way to lower cholesterol?
A: False, Now, if it’s the wrong types of fat, you know, like, trans fats, then sure. But, but if it’s healthy fats, like coconut oil, avocado, nuts, things like that, probably not. The best way to lower cholesterol is to reduce your sugar intake.

6. Protein is the most important factor in muscle growth?
A: False, sleep is the most important factor in muscle growth. So, protein is important for muscle growth, however, what speeds up muscle growth the most is proper rest and recovery. If you’re awake, your body is breaking down, period. You’re in a catabolic breakdown state. If you do damage while you work out, you’re actually tearing down your muscles. It’s only through deep sleep. and that recovery process that it could reset the size that into muscle. So protein is important for muscle growth.

Sleep is a challenging issue for the life of a private investigator as the hours sometimes require late-night work.
